This Sunday, May 6, will be the 14th annual Flying Pig Marathon. Considered young compared to Cincinnati’s sixth oldest race in America, the Pig had the third largest first-time marathon in the country in 1999. With more than 30,000 participants in last year’s [5K, 10K, half and full marathon] races, this particular event is sure to bring plenty of out of town visitors as well as Greater Cincinnati residents to downtown Cincinnati. Have your voice heard at the public hearing regarding the Brent Spence Bridge. Mark your calendar for a very important meeting for Wednesday, April 25 from 5–8pm at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. At this meeting there will be discussions of replacing the bridge as well as various design options, which will differ in appearance and overall cost to construct. Replacing the Brent Spence Bridge will greatly impact the economy of Northern Kentucky, including but not limited to its property values and industry. Each time my husband and I drive over the railroad track that runs along Wasson Avenue in Hyde Park and Oakley, we talk about how awesome it would be if that unused railroad track was a walking path. After all, it runs for 6 miles from Victory Parkway to Mariemont by way of Hyde Park and Mt.Lookout (through Ault Park). There is even a 2 mile long perfectly straight stretch running through Hyde Park and Rookwood Pavilion. There is a fan page on Facebook, although we’re not sure who the organizers are. Recently for Mother’s Day, The Daily Beast conducted its annual ranking of best cities for moms. Cincinnati came in at number three. The rankings were based on the following criteria: Mothers-per-capita: Percentage of mothers in each city with one or more children under 18 (from census data.) Educational quality: Overall quality of schools, based on standardized test performance. Child care: The number of child care workers per child age 5, pulled from census data and Bureau of Labor Statistics. One of my favorite signs of summer is the start of the Hyde Park Farmers’ Market near Hyde Park Square. The market kicks off it’s pre-season this Sunday, May 1. The market will be located in the US Bank Parking lot, 3424 Edwards Road, 1/2 block from Hyde Park Square. This year’s hours are 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The market will take place every week through the end of summer. On Sunday, May 15, Bravo’s “Top Chef: The Tour” will be filming at the market.
