It’s a complicated question, but the answer is that you should feel safe in Cincinnati. However, like all major U.S. cities, Cincinnati does have crime. It is simply important to be aware that it exists and use common sense.

If you’ve ever spent time downtown after a theatre performance, visited bars and restaurants in areas like Mt. Lookout or Hyde Park, caught a movie in Clifton or hung out late nights up in Mt. Adams, you would have seen quite a lot of people out enjoying themselves. Residents generally feel safe in Cincinnati, especially in family-friendly and populated areas.

The goal of this entry is to provide resources to you so you can research area crime statistics. However, it’s always important to keep statistics in perspective. Remember that the numbers are concentrated within the city limits, which are somewhat smaller in Cincinnati than in some other major cities (in part due to our south end being cut off by the Ohio River and merging into Kentucky). It’s not to say that the crime doesn’t exist, but all major cities have concentrated areas in which crime is higher. Some have more neighborhoods that balance this concentration than others.
It’s about being informed and being smart! Whether you’re new to Cincinnati or have grown up nearby, there’s no reason to worry about being a Cincinnati resident. Welcome home!
