Are you ready for tax time? Did you install an Energy Star upgrade in 2009? Then you need to make sure you file correctly for the $1,500 tax credit.

Energy Star Tax Credit

  • If you’ve installed Energy Star windows, doors, roofing, insulation, heating/cooling, water headers, etc., make sure your item qualifies for the credit. Here’s the government’s chart about qualifications.
  • For example, windows: Not all energy star windows qualify. They have to have a certain rating. Personally speaking, we have documentation from Gilkey for our new windows verifying their qualification for the credit. (FYI, all Gilkey windows qualify.)
  • Your items need to have been placed in service in your primary residence between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.
  • The credit is 30% of the product (including installation) cost, up to $1,500.
  • The form states that you do not need to submit documentation. The form says you can “rely on manufacturer certification” that your product meets the standards required for the credit. Retain this documentation as well as your receipt.
  • If you did NOT install one of the accepted Energy Star items in the 2009 calendar year, there is still time! Do this in 2010 to receive the credit next tax year.
  • This is available ONCE over two years, not for multiple projects and not for multiple years.
  • To recap more about this credit, read this blog entry, and the entry here.
  • More FAQs at the Energy Star site.
  • Here’s the form you need if you are filing for this in 2009.
