step03lgThe city of Cincinnati and Rumpke have announced new recycling guidelines. Due to the installation of some new high-tech equipment, Rumpke is now able to accept more items. The new equipment will be able to electronically scan items and determine their type.

The new acceptable items are as follows:

  • Pizza boxes (must be free of food residue)
  • ALL plastic bottles and jugs, regardless of number (caps removed — NO butter tubs or plastic bags.)

The new equipment will be installed in Rumpke’s St. Bernard Material Recovery Facility early in the new year, but the company is accepting these items now.

This is part of the city’s commitment to increase it’s “landfill diversion rate” (number of items that go to the landfill) to 50 percent by 2011. The city’s current rate is around 12 percent, so these increases should help work toward that goal.

Mayor Mallory reminds, “We need all of our residents to do their part to help us meet our goal. We need to make recycling a habit. I encourage all residents to get a bin and use it. Each resident will make a difference.”

Currently, any City of Cincinnati resident is eligible for free recycling service, so there is no reason not to take advantage if you live within the city. Only about 40 of people use the curbside service today. Recycling is easy — you don’t have to sort and you don’t even have to check plastic numbers anymore. To get your free bin, city residents can call 513-591-6000.

Recycling service varies in other parts of our area. If you live outside the city and do not have a curbside bin, you should call Rumpke at 513-242-4600. To learn all about the recycling system, read this. (Please note, this document is not updated yet with the very new acceptable items.)

Of course all previous acceptable materials are still acceptable. These include all glass jars and bottles, paperboard, newspaper and junk mail, aluminum and steel cans. Remember, remove all caps and rinse out all items.
