Charity buys pencils with hotdogs

Festival supports educational outreach efforts in Oakley

Cincinnati, Ohio, 2009 – On May 29, Oakley After Hours ushers in summer with live music, festival fare, a street-wide open house and hotdogs – hotdogs that will buy school supplies for 200 students at St. Cecilia’s School, located just down the street from the festival.

The hotdog stand will accept donations to raise money for the annual school supply drive sponsored by AmyBSells Giving Back charity, which began in 2008 as a community outreach effort from Cincinnati Realtor Amy Broghamer.

“The Oakley community is coming together to celebrate and to support each other,” Broghamer said. “Education is an important means of keeping that same community healthy, happy and prosperous – the end goal of AmyBSells Giving Back.”

The hotdog stand is being co-sponsored by Biggs of Hyde Park, and every penny of the donations will go directly to purchasing school supplies for the St. Cecilia student body, of which 52 percent come from disadvantaged and impoverished homes.

“Amy’s organization focuses on the education of the children in our community, and we believe in contributing to the development of our future community members and leaders,” said Kelly Bretcher, Human Resource Specialist and Community Relations Coordinator for Bigg’s of Hyde Park. “The Oakley After Hours provides a wonderful venue to raise money to support St. Cecilia’s, which will foster learning and student development.”

Last year, the charity donated more than 6,500 pens, paper, folders, protractors, and other supplies – a haul that filled an entire single-car garage. For the 2009-2010 school year, the fundraising needs are $6,000 in supplies and monetary contributions.

“This is, ultimately, about the families whose children don’t have the right school supplies to participate in class, or maybe don’t eat three full meals a day,” Broghamer said. “Especially in these challenging economic times, getting an education is essential so that students can become productive, healthy members of our community. Oakley After Hours is a good fit for the spirit of our organization.”

Oakley After Hours, a joint effort between the Oakley Community Council and local businesses, is intended to showcase the organizations in the neighborhood, build a sense of collaboration and provide community members an opportunity to volunteer and give back.
