There are some things you should never cut corners on… no matter what the situation. And your home insurance is one of those things! I had a chat with my State Farm Insurance representative, Greg Meinberg. He’s fantastic and insures several of my clients.

I like State Farm insurance very much. It’s not that you can’t get insurance from other providers, but State Farm has an amazing reputation and many loyal clients. It is different from many other companies — you may understand this, but not realize why.<state_farm_logo

I talked with Abby, one of my clients who works with Greg. She said, “It has been such a  great experience so far working with Greg and his team at StateFarm. The customer service is excellent — they are always so pleasant on the phone and are more than happy to answer any questions I may have — whether large or small.  They walked me through my Homeowner”s policy when I purchased my home — which was great for a first time home buyer — and they have clearly and kindly explained any changes or questions that have come up along the way.”

I asked Greg a few questions, and provided the interview here. The things we discussed are important points to consider no matter where or from whom you are receiving your insurance policies.

AB: Pretend I am a first-time home buyer. What is your main bit of advice for me?

GM: One of the main things we stress is the importance of meeting with your agent to review the policy. Most people get the insurance on their home because it is a requirement through the bank — most of the time, the policyholder believes the cheaper, the better. Many policyholders don’t understand what their coverage actually “covers” until it’s too late. Stopping into your agent’s office for a quick half-hour review can make those crazy times a little less hectic — because you are educated on your policy, no matter what policy it is: auto, health, life, et cetera.

AB: Tell my readers, what makes State Farm different from other insurance companies?

GM: State Farm Insurance sits apart from other insurance companies because we are a mutual company.  Instead of being owned by stock holders, we are owned by the policyholders. We do not have board members looking out for the best interest of our stockholders, but for our policyholders. State Farm is [rated] number one in claims and services. If anything were ever to happen, you would have the comfort of having a huge team on your side. Our policyholders like the fact that they have an agent to go to with their questions instead of a website and 1-800 number (with a long menu to go through before their question is answered.)

AB: Is there anything special about insurance in this current economic climate?

GM: We think it is important to educate people on products like health insurance, life insurance, mortgage disability, and disability income. Since this unfortunate economy is costing so many people their jobs, they are losing their employee benefits as well. Getting life insurance outside of your employer is important in the event that would ever happen. When you have life insurance with an employer, you do not own it. Having control over such benefits would protect you in the future.

AB: Thanks, Greg! Would you like to add anything else?

GM: State Farm has been insuring homes for 60 years; we insure 1 out of every 5 homes!  Your agent can customize the quote to best fit your needs. Here is a good link if you need advice for moving:  http://www.statefarm.com/learning/life_stages/learning_lifestages_moving.asp
